DRIFT

Drift consists of three main elements that make up the installation.

1. There are approximately 60 cast polyurethane grass forms that populate the main hall area of the venue
2. 4 light boxes, (usually used with fibre optic systems), that have specially fabricated colour wheels. These colour wheel consisting of 6 colours each project a changing light over and through the grass forms.
3. A soundtrack developed in collaboration with musician, Tom Silvester, comprising of 2 CD's that are played concurrently through 2 different PA systems creating a special interplay.

The beginnings of the work came from a curiosity with the meeting point of nature and culture. When we first looked at the venue, having been offered the opportunity to do a show, we were amazed by the strength of space. It immediately reminded us of similar spaces that we had experienced in The Azores whilst working there. These spaces were found in derelict buildings left from an earthquake 20 years previously where nature had taken over, engulfing the remains.

The idea behind the work was to create a field of grass that had reclaimed the space, as if moving in from the nearby park. The size and scale of the work is important in that we wanted the viewer to be able to walk through the work and experience it in a different way.

The lighting system was used to create a movement like wind moving through the grass and this is complimented by the soundtrack. The movement of the colour wheels in the light projectors, and the structure of the soundtrack are cyclical referring to a passage of time.
