Food Futures
2012 46cm x 46cm x 5cm
sculpture: wire, paper-mache, and collaged archival photo

Food Futures is based on an original plate held in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. The artists kept the statement Waste Not Want Not which encircles the rim and introduced imagery of grains such as corn, wheat, barley and rice. At the centre, a reference for a roulette wheel. This piece highlights the ethical issues of the commodification of food staples and the potential for market profiteering. Is it right to gamble and profit on food staples when the losers will be denied access to basic food due to soaring costs? This couldn’t be a more timely subject as droughts in the US and wet weather in Europe in 2012
are set to cause wheat prices to soar. Who will be the winners and losers?
